“I was brought into the process as the company was preparing to open for the Luminato Festival in Toronto in 2017. I worked very closely with the scenographer-director Pamela Howard (OBE) as an assistant, choreographer and touring director for this 100-minute full length work including 22 scene changes! Blessed with an incredible cast of performers, this production was presented in Toronto twice, as well as Taipei, Tel Aviv, Kiev, Lviv, Prague and Litomyšl.” M-J.C

Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Play with Music is a multi-national collaboration with a core creative team from Canada, UK, and Czech Republic, plus seven actor-singers and four musician-performers. The essential quality of this chamber musical is the total synchronicity of word, image, and music.

The work was conceived as an art installation inhabited by performers in which Charlotte Salomon’s paintings come to life. Charlotte was a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin (1917-1943). She is primarily remembered as the creator of an autobiographical series of paintings Leben? oder Theater?: Ein Singspiel (Life? or Theater?: A Song-play) consisting of 769 individual works painted between 1941 and 1943 in the south of France, while Salomon was in hiding from the Nazis. In October 1943 she was captured and deported to Auschwitz where she died.
