“As a director, I believe in bringing all the artists involved (performers, designers, writers, composers) from the beginning of the creation. This allows the development of layered, meticulous and integrated work, and fosters a level of communication that is central for accomplishing a strong artistic vision.” ~ M-JC

Since 2000, Marie-Josée Chartier has been active as a director (metteure en scène) for music, dance, multi-media and opera productions, many featured in this section of the website. Working on complex, multi-layered productions that include both video and live performance has renewed Marie-Josée’s commitment to collaborative creation.

Collaborations with the Gryphon Trio, l’Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal (ECM+),Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, Toca Loca, Tapestry Opera, Pleiades Theatre, and Le Théâtre Français de Toronto, among other Canadian companies, have allowed her to work closely with composers such as Linda C. Smith, Rodney Sharman, Allison Cameron, Ana Sokolović, André Ristic, Michel Gonneville and Christos Hatzis, and singers such as Krisztina Szabó, Barbara Hannigan, Pascale Beaudin, Patricia O’Callaghan, Xin Wang, Derek Kwan and Patricia Cano, and theatre artists from right across the country.

In these next pages you will find a few samples of Chartier’s directorial work.
